4 vehicle safety technologies

September 21, 2020 | SECURA Insurance

Technology is a big part of our everyday life. Even car manufacturers are incorporating technologies in newer vehicles to help reduce accidents and keep everyone safe called Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). In some vehicles you can turn off these safety features, but using the features could help reduce accidents. Learn about some of the most popular ADAS features available in vehicles today.

Lane departure warning

The lane departure warning alerts you if your vehicle is about to veer out of the lane and warns you by beeping or displaying a light on your dashboard. Some vehicles with this feature also have lane keeping assistance, which reacts when you start to cross the lane line and steer you to keep the vehicle centered in the lane.

Blind spot warning

This system uses cameras, radar, and sensors to detect vehicles you can’t see next to or behind your vehicle. Typically drivers will get a notice on their side mirrors when a vehicle is in the blind spot. According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the crash involvement rate for vehicles with blind-spot monitoring was 14% lower than the same models without the equipment.

Forward and rear collision warning

When you are in drive or reverse these systems will detect collisions in the vehicles path and alert the driver or actually slow the vehicle down. According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, forward collision warning systems reduce rear-end accidents by 27%.

Adaptive cruise control

This technology assists with acceleration and breaking when using cruise control to keep a set distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Adaptive cruise control can also help with fuel efficiency by maintaining a consistent speed and gradually accelerating and breaking only when necessary.

If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, consider choosing a model with some of these safety technologies.
